Gananoque 1000 Islands Cruise to Boldt Castle & Heart Island

Gananoque sits on the Ontario shore of the St. Lawrence River, right where the water leaves the northeast corner of Lake Ontario and threads through one of North America’s most photographed archipelagos. The name “Thousand Islands” is charmingly inexact: the region actually holds 1,864 islands, counted by a strict rule — to qualify, a piece of land must stay above water all year, cover more than one square foot, and support at least one living tree. They scatter for roughly 80 kilometres, from Cape Vincent and Alexandria Bay on the American side to Kingston and Rockport on the Canadian side, straddling the international border the whole way. Geologically they are the exposed spine of the Frontenac Arch, where the ancient granite of the Canadian Shield reaches south to meet the Adirondacks — which is why so many of the islands are bald pink rock crowned with a single windblown pine.

A cruise from Gananoque is the most direct way to actually get among them. The City Cruises fleet departs the town’s main pier and runs three sailing lengths — one, three, or five hours. The one-hour loop stays close to home, weaving through the Admiralty and Navy groups just offshore. The three-hour sailing pushes deeper, past Millionaire’s Row and out toward Boldt Castle and Zavikon Island. The five-hour cruise is the headline trip: it crosses into U.S. waters and stops at Heart Island so you can step off and explore Boldt Castle on foot.

Boldt Castle and the saddest love story on the river

The castle you’ll see rising from Heart Island is Boldt Castle, and its story is the one every guide tells. George C. Boldt was the proprietor of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria, the most celebrated hotelier of his age. In 1900 he set 300 stonemasons, carpenters, and artists to work building a full-size, six-storey, 120-room Rhineland castle as a Valentine’s gift for his wife, Louise. The estate was to include tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, a children’s playhouse (the Alster Tower), and a stone dove cote.

Then, in January 1904, Louise died suddenly at the age of 31. Boldt telegraphed the island with a single instruction — stop all construction — and walked away. He never set foot on Heart Island again, though he kept summering in the Thousand Islands until his death in 1916. The castle stood open to the weather and the vandals for more than seventy years before the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority began restoring it. Today the five-hour cruise lets you tour the finished rooms and the grounds yourself. One practical note: Heart Island is U.S. territory, so every passenger on the Boldt Castle stopover clears U.S. Customs and needs a valid passport (or NEXUS card) — citizens of other countries need the appropriate visa or ESTA. Singer Castle and the Gilded Age islands

Boldt’s castle is not the only one. Further downriver on Dark Island stands Singer Castle, completed in 1905 for Frederick Gilbert Bourne, president of the Singer Manufacturing Company of sewing-machine fame. His architect, Ernest Flagg — who also designed Singer’s record-breaking New York skyscraper — modelled the granite, Gothic-Revival pile on a castle from Sir Walter Scott’s novel Woodstock, complete with secret passages. Unlike Boldt’s, Singer Castle was actually finished and lived in; it remains the only fully completed Gilded Age castle on the river and even rents rooms for overnight stays. Most Gananoque sailings frame Boldt Castle as the star, while Singer Castle features on cruises departing from Brockville further east — worth knowing when you choose where to sail from.

What you’ll glide past

Beyond the castles, the narrated commentary (offered in English and French) points out the landmarks that give the river its character: Zavikon Island, long claimed by boat captains to be linked by “the world’s shortest international bridge”; Millionaire’s Row, the cluster of Gilded Age summer mansions; the working locks and freighters of the St. Lawrence Seaway; and the soaring span of the 1000 Islands Bridge connecting Ontario to New York. On a clear day the water turns the deep blue-green that gave the region its postcard reputation.

When to go, and how to choose your sailing

The cruise season runs roughly May through October. Summer brings the warmest water and longest days; the last weeks of September and early October bring the maple-and-oak foliage that sets the granite shorelines ablaze and makes for the best photographs of the year. If your main goal is Boldt Castle, book the five-hour Gananoque sailing and bring your passport. If you simply want the scenery and the stories in an afternoon, the three-hour trip covers the marquee sights without the border stop. Travelling with restless kids or short on time? The one-hour loop still delivers the islands. And if you’d rather trade the deck for an entirely different vantage, you can always see the same castles and channels from the air — but for most visitors, the river itself, at water level, is the experience worth booking.
